Any business is the sum of it's history. Here's where we've come from.
We landed as individuals
We've all come from a background of small family businesses. We've grown up hearing our parent's stories around the dining table relating to staff, cashflow, growth, setbacks and more. They taught us what business could be and how to deal with people.
Convex landed
Sept '11: From the boot of a car driving around Wellington, we were as iif Chartered Accountants. Focused on ideas, innovation and figures, we were slowly picking up customers one-by-one.
Xero Partners
Oct '11: Early on we realised that Xero was the future. They’ve played a special part in our journey – without them we wouldn’t have been able to scale as we have, nor provide the real time advice our customers need. Thank you Xero.
Convex (nearly) departs
Mar '12: Six months in we’d had total sales of $35,115. Turns out getting a start up off the ground was a little more difficult than anticipated. Things have changed more than a little since then.
Building a team
Nov '12: Eventually the customers came and the first employee joined the team, working from Hamish’s house. Sorry Lisa-Jean, things were a bit mickey-mouse back then.
Office Space
Dec '12: We celebrate the signing our first lease…never mind the green walls, the air conditioning, or the meeting room with no soundproofing or windows.
Xero Awards
Jun '15: We were named finalists in the Accounting Partner of the Year category. While we didn’t win, we thought coming second out of all accountants in the country was pretty good.
Gold Awards
Jun '16: Named finalists in the Wellington Gold Awards (best in Wellington Business). While we didn’t take it out, the night was an acknowledgement of our team and a thank you to the customers who have helped us achieve.
Sydney
Aug '16: The first of our quasi-annual work trips takes place, first up it was Sydney and surfing lessons. We find out after, one of the team can't swim.
Studio Legal
Jan '17: Studio Legal who we work collaboratively with was launched. Our common clients (and family relationship) means they play a special role in our business.
Second Office - Porirua!
May '17: We opened our second office in Mana. Global domination commenced.
Melbourne
Jul '17: More team building, shopping, and controlled alcohol intake.
Trade Mark Troubles
Dec '17: Turns out international companies wielding trade mark threats over small NZ business is daunting. We negotiated a bump or two.
Moving Office
Jul '18: We moved to our new home, where we’re not embarrassed of the meeting room. It’s a home we’re proud to share with Convex (nee Studio) Legal.
Rebrand
Aug '18: We rebranded from iif to Convex Accounting (and from Studio Legal to Convex Legal). We’ll always have ideas, innovation and figures at our heart, but to be honest iif was just a little bit of a mouthful. We’re also proud to share the name with Convex Legal.
Xero Award Winners
Aug '19: We were named Advisory Partner of the year at the 2019 NZ Xero awards – bringing us out on top in the coaching/advisory field in NZ (and were a finalist in one other category). We had a collective hangover the next day.
Marlborough Sounds
Oct '19: Queen Charlotte Track, fishing and a lot of nothing. Rewarding the team for the hard work and exceptional results.
CAANZ Awards
Nov '19: Chartered Accountants Australia & NZ recognise us as the leading emerging firm in NZ. They also recognise Riann as being one of the outstanding female leaders in NZ accounting firms. They're right, she is.
Covid
Mar '20: Like everyone else, Covid happens. Sales down, employees to pay, and every customer needing help all at once. Our team go above and beyond, our customers are happy and we get through.
Wellington Gold Awards Finalist 2020
Jul '20: Convex Accounting became a finalist in the Emerging Services Category, in the 20th anniversary of the Wellington Gold Awards
Xero Award Winners... again!
Feb'21: We were named Small Accounting Firm of the year at the 2020 NZ Xero awards – we owe this to the collective effort of our amazing team over the 2020 year!
Third Office - Tauranga!
Feb '21: Quest for global domination continues with the opening of our third office
Covid... again
Aug '21: Back to Zoom calls and working in our pyjamas. We're experts at it now! We made it through Level 4 with kotahitanga and daily Stuff quizzes.
History Seems to Repeat
Feb '22: Finalists in the Xero Awards....again for the third straight year. Who said history never repeats?
Closing Tauranga
Mar '22: We close the Tauranga office and deal with a period of change. We're stronger for the experience.
The future....
We've got plans to help more businesses, grow more exceptional team members, roll out more services and open in more places. Keep an eye out for more.
