We’re focused on being your “no problem” go to. Need something done? No problem, we’ll sort it.

We Are

Business Specialists

We've grown from the ground up. We've come from no customer base, no networks and no reputation. We know what it takes to be in business.

Most of our team have also run their own small businesses, or have grown up around the dinner table with parents who are self-employed. This means we know the pressures you face – staff, cashflow, and pricing. All while keeping an eye on the next opportunity.

We also know what it takes to build wealth outside of your business - having all your eggs in one basket can be risky. So, we understand property strategies and how to accumulate wealth.

Opinionated

You're going to know what we think. We're not going to hide between a spreadsheet. You'll get transparency between the eyes. We'll help you ask the questions you didn't know to ask, and call things as we see it.

To that end, we (honestly) believe that business can change lives. It's our role to educate business owners and to create new opportunities. That leads to more family wealth, more employment, and better pathways for your team.

Fast

We change things, quickly. If we find a better way to do things, then we’ll give it a crack. Sometimes it’s perfect, sometimes we learn. We’re driven by tomorrow being better than today - that sense of forward progress keeps us going day after day.

Proud

We’re proud of who we help, the work we do, and the organisations we support. If you’d like us to help you, and you can see a win-win, then reach out.

Our Team:

We’re a boutique team of six Chartered Accountants and Advisors, supported by accountants, bookkeepers and experienced administrative staff.

We think they’re exceptional.

Our Leadership:

  • Mainly defined by three kids, my wife, and a dog. Part time (hopeless) drummer, record collector and would like to go fishing more than I do.

All of my family are self-employed. I grew up watching them talk about cash flow, staffing, sales and profitability. I founded Convex Accounting in 2011 to help people like my family, and to at the same time challenge the stereotype of the dull, cardigan-wearing accountant.

My musical guilty pleasures include De La Soul, Erroll Garner, Sammy Davis Jr and, yes, Taylor Swift (1989 is exceptional, the rest is rubbish). When I’m not at work, I’ll be spending time with my family (twin boys and a girl), playing the drums, or trying to get the kids to flip the record over so I don't need to get off the couch.

I'm born and bred locally, descendant of Ngāti Toa, grew up in Porirua, went to school in the Hutt and won't live anywhere other than Wellington.

Or, if you'd prefer the typically dull bio you'd expect:

I finished university in 2005 after completing BA and BCA, with first class honours in Accounting. Along the way I had some time in a Big-4 accounting firm, which frankly I hated (but gained some valuable insights) before joining a boutique tax advice firm.

There I completed my Chartered Accounting qualification, and provided specialist tax structuring and tax audit advice. This was primarily to other Chartered Accountants and Lawyers. Here I learnt the 'ropes' when it comes to interacting with the IRD, as well as developed a deep understanding of complex tax issues.

At this point though I realised there was more to life than tax. I was off for a stint in France teaching English and travelling. We then returned to NZ and got Convex off the ground.

  • I am a passionate coffee consumer who loves to explore different ways of making coffee. I am currently loving a filter coffee made with my bright yellow MoccaMaster but am very excited about purchasing a nitro coffee maker so I can enjoy a nitro cold brew during the summer months.

I am a mediocre golfer, who needs to find more time to play, so if you need an excuse, I am your man.

I am also a proud rescue dog owner. My wife and I adopted a dog when living in the Carribbean and he has been with us ever since. He is well travelled and has lived in four different countries between our time in the Carribbean, Channel Islands and New Zealand.

Or, if you'd prefer the typically dull bio you'd expect:

I finished university in 2005 after completing a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration, majoring in Accounting. My first accounting job was at a major international accounting firm where I gained broad business experience working in their advisory team (and completed my Chartered Accountancy qualification). I was then lucky enough to spend some time working in the Caribbean and Channel Islands.

Once back in NZ I spent some time at working for a Kiwisaver provider learning the ins and outs of the finance world before arriving at Convex in November 2020.

Our History

  • We welcome Fitzco Chartered Accountants into the Convex family, and begin our sponsorship of the mighty Upper Hutt Rams

  • We welcomed Chris Macdonald as a Director in Convex. He balances Hamish’s breakneck speed with sensible questions.

  • We close our office and deal with a period of change. But! We end up with more staff WFH in Tauranga than we had in the office…

  • We’re finalists in the Xero Awards....again for the third straight year! We stop entering awards.

  • On a quiet quest for global domination, we open our third office in Tauranga.

  • We were named Small Accounting Firm of the year at the NZ Xero Awards, down to the collective effort of our amazing team.

  • Convex Accounting became a finalist in the Emerging Services Category, in the 20th anniversary of the Wellington Gold Awards

  • Sales down, employees to pay, and every customer needing help all at once. Our team went above and beyond.

  • Chartered Accountants Australia & NZ recognised us as the leading emerging firm in NZ.

  • We were named Advisory Partner of the year, recognising us for leading advisory in NZ. We enjoyed a collective hangover.

  • We rebranded from iif to Convex Accounting (and from Studio Legal to Convex Legal). To be honest, iif was a bit of a mouthful.

  • Turns out international companies wielding trade mark threats over small NZ business is quite daunting. Hiccups ensue.

  • We opened our second office in Mana (close to home, and before WFH was a thing…). Global domination commenced.

  • Studio Legal was launched! Our common clients (and family relationship) means they play a special role in our business.

  • Named finalists in the Wellington Gold Awards. While we didn’t take it out, the night was an acknowledgement of our team.

  • Finalists in the Accounting Partner of the Year. We thought coming second out of all accountants in NZ was pretty good!

  • We celebrate the signing our first lease…ignoring the green walls, the air conditioning, or the meeting room with no soundproofing or windows.

  • The customers eventually came and the first employee joined the team, working from Hamish’s house. Sorry Lisa-Jean, things were a bit mickey-mouse back then.

  • Six months in we’d had total sales of just $35,115. Turns out getting a start up off the ground was a little more difficult than anticipated.

  • From day-one we realised that Xero was the future. They’ve played a special part in our journey. Without them we wouldn’t have been able to scale as we have, nor provide the real time advice our customers need. Thank you Xero.

  • From the boot of a car driving around Wellington, we were as iif Chartered Accountants. Focused on ideas, innovation and figures - we slowly picked up customers one-by-one.
